Is new year just another day?

Each today, well-lived, makes yesterday a dream of happiness and each tomorrow a vision of hope. Look, therefore, to this one day, for it and it alone is life.

— Sanskrit Poem —

According to what I have learned everyday matters! Every minute matters! Every second matters! Life is worth celebrating everyday, not just on the 1st of January. We as humans are used to think that we should make resolutions, plans, and specially celebrate our lives on days like new year. We need to understand that it is always ok to celebrate everyday, start over and plan things and work the plans also.

Why are you waiting for a special day to start chasing your dreams? Nobody would do that for you unless you do. So, that is why you need to do that for your self.

I personally prefer BALANCE. Whatever I do I need to do find my balance. I do not like to get overwhelmed and get distracted. I always like to go inside. That is my kind of new year resolution. I basically sit in calm place on new year’s eve and list down the things that went wrong and things that made me successful in the year. I need to find out what is missing in my life and correct them rather than celebrating outwardly and updating status on my social media accounts. I want be happy within and that is what I call the true happiness.

On the first day of this year, I wanted to set three goals for myself.

  1. Conscious behavior.

Conscious behavior in psychology derives from conscious thought processes, those thoughts of which we are actively aware. I find it tough to find my balance at times. Sometimes, I am unaware of my thoughts. Sometimes, I cannot stop my monkey mind. This behavior makes terrible mistakes and it can affect me in ways I have never even thought of. So, this year I want to behave consciously and I know if I do this correct every other thing in my life falls into their correct places.

2. Spiritual development

I do not at any cost suggest to go temple, kovil or church daily by writing this point. For me, it is going inside, finding yourself, finding inner peace. I have already started to do Yoga and I want to continue that this year. And also I want to meditate and relax my mind from constant and continuous distractions. Once you are spiritually developed your focus will increase and you will find clarity in your decisions.

3. Financial freedom

This is one aspect we all need to work on. I am not financially free at the moment and I want to start working on my financial freedom in next 10 years. I want to lay the foundation for that in this year and yes you guessed it correct, “ it is a long term plan”. I do not prefer to work like a slave whole my life. I want to work steadily for several years and find the freedom to do whatever I want and whatever I am passionate about.

So moving on from my personal experience to the things in general, the freethinker, Dr. E.W. Adikaram, used to say that the more festivals a society needs as temporary distractions, the more ailing it is. In other words, if enough happiness is attainable in your day-to-day life: what you do for a living, your personal relationships and how productively you spend your leisure, most people would not have to count much on special ‘happiness days’, so to speak. Perhaps, this is why you hear cynics say, “if you were moneyed, you would have Christmas / New Year every day.”

For me personally, New Year is just another day of 365 precocious days I have been blessed with! For me everyday matters. Everyday is a new day and everyday is a new possibility! It is up to you to make the best out it.

You have been blessed with 365 new possibilities and a blank book of 365 pages, make sure to use it wisely and write a masterpiece for yourself!
