Politics is not my cup of tea! Yet, wherever I go I keep hearing the frustration and displeasure of people over the current economic crises and irresponsible behavior of the so called politicians.

Year 2022 is also sure to throw up daunting challenges and set new goals for Sri Lankans entangled in multiple crises.

There are no signs of Sri Lanka’s economic health improving and we keep hearing the news of skyrocketing prices of daily essentials and pretty much everything in the country. Here are winding queues in most parts of the country for cooking gas, kerosene and milk powder, and a food crisis is the last thing the country wants. Food crisis is said to be looming with the national agricultural output decreasing due to the current fertilizer shortage. Power plants are low on fuel resulting uncountable number of power cuts. The cost of living continues to rise steeply and experiencing a luxurious life seems to dwindle.

What did really go wrong in the country? Honestly, what we are experiencing on the economic front is something that everybody knew would happen someday. ‘If a person lives beyond his or her means, and gets into debt, which takes a sizable chunk out of his or her income, then he or she will be in serious trouble in case of a drop in his or her income.” It is common sense. The same goes for the countries that do not care to curtail their expenditure or manage their resources frugally. The politicians have been wasting our resources for decades and here we are now! Pandemic made the situation from bad to worse. The drastic drop in the country’s foreign reserves made the rulers helpless as the expected to pay back loans with foreign exchange to come. Politicians are responsible for the current economic mess. We all have a lesson to, we need be careful with our debts as there is a price for debt.

Last but not least let’s remember “ Borrowed clothes are either too tight or too loose!”

The year ahead of us will be a tough one, but we are left with no alternative but to resolve to face it while staying safe!
